Case Study: Dudley

Supporting an elderly dog with arthritis & pain

Dudley, an elderly rescue Labrador, was experiencing increasing stiffness, arthritis pain, and general age-related discomfort despite ongoing medication. The session focused on giving Dudley the opportunity to self-select botanical and aromatic support for both his physical pain and emotional wellbeing.

From the moment he arrived, Dudley was relaxed, curious, and engaged. He showed strong interest in anti-inflammatory and pain-supporting botanicals such as St John’s Wort, rosehips, spirulina, devil’s claw, and bladderwrack, all commonly chosen by older dogs to support mobility, circulation, reduce inflammation and support overall vitality.

When introduced to essential oils, Dudley clearly gravitated towards oils associated with pain relief and improved circulation, including Sweet Birch, Wintergreen, and Black Pepper, alongside Frankincense and Violet Leaf for emotional balance and stress support. Throughout the session he remained calm, settled, and notably quiet (he is usually very vocal about everything!), resting comfortably and self-soothing with toys while inhaling the oils.

By the end of the session, Dudley appeared deeply relaxed and content, demonstrating how instinctive selection can offer valuable insight into an older dog’s physical and emotional needs.

A session plan was given showing ongoing support recommended to help manage pain, mobility, and wellbeing at home.
