Case Study: Tolkien
Helping Tolkien Settle, Focus and Feel More Grounded
Tolkien returned for his second session at The Win Clinic, arriving full of enthusiasm and excitement. Happy to see me again, he entered the room confidently, but with very high energy — pacing continuously and responding to every sound and movement around him.
As this was a follow-up session, the focus was on revisiting Tolkien’s previous choices and allowing him to further explore botanicals and oils that could support both his physical comfort and emotional regulation. From his first session, Tolkien had already shown interest in calendula, hawthorn berries and spirulina, the latter of which he has been enjoying at home.
When offered a wider range of botanicals during this session, Tolkien was selective and clear in his responses. He gravitated again towards calendula, marshmallow root and hawthorn berries, ignoring the rest. These choices were particularly meaningful: calendula is often selected for soothing allergies, skin irritation and digestive discomfort; marshmallow root gently coats and supports the digestive system; and hawthorn berries are frequently chosen to support cardiovascular health, circulation and emotional resilience.
We then explored floral waters, and Tolkien chose to have frankincense hydrosol gently stroked onto his chest — a grounding, supportive choice — while showing little interest in the others.
As we moved on to essential oils, Tolkien’s body language began to shift. Yarrow and German chamomile were warmly received, and as he inhaled them his pacing noticeably reduced. These oils are often chosen for relaxation, pain relief and allergy support, and Tolkien’s response clearly reflected this calming influence.
Building on this, vetiver was introduced — a deeply grounding oil often selected by restless or over-stimulated dogs. The effect was immediate and striking. Tolkien settled onto his blanket, remaining close to the oils and spending quiet time inhaling them. Roman chamomile was also welcomed, complementing his earlier herbal choices and offering additional soothing support for digestion, skin and emotional balance.
Violet leaf, commonly chosen by dogs who experience anticipatory anxiety, was met with particular enthusiasm. Tolkien spent time mouthing the bottle, wagging energetically and seeking closeness, suggesting both comfort and emotional connection.
By the end of the session, Tolkien was resting contentedly on the floor, his nose oriented towards the open bottles. He rolled onto his back, offering his belly — a beautiful sign of trust and relaxation. When it was time to leave, he was calm, happy and wagging, having clearly benefited from the session.
Outcome and Ongoing Support
Tolkien continues to show a strong ability to self-select botanicals and oils that support both his high-energy nature and his need for grounding. Regular sessions would allow him to further develop these coping strategies, helping him settle more easily and respond more calmly to stimulating situations.
At home, continued use of spirulina alongside occasional offerings of calendula and hawthorn berries may be beneficial. Vetiver could support grounding, while violet leaf may help ease anticipatory anxiety around events such as visitors arriving or trips to the vet. A bespoke essential oil blend, such as Back to Earth, used in a diffuser, may also help create a calmer environment for the whole household.
Tolkien’s session is a wonderful example of how zoopharmacognosy can gently support busy, sensitive dogs — helping them feel calmer, more balanced and better able to cope with the world around them.
